Boundary Run & Walk
Sue
The Institute’s annual Boundary Run and Walk will take place on the evening of Thursday 28th June.
It’s a scenic 8-mile route around the Institute Boundary on tracks, through fields and woods. There are trophies for the first Rec. Soc. affiliated runners and walker, but many choose to take part for fun and to enjoy the scenery. The bar will be open and the barbecue burning. Start: IAH Main Gate, Walkers 16:40, Runners 17:40. Finish: Cricket Field.
Sue
Ten teams of four took part in this year’s relay, each team member racing around the 1.6-mile loop starting and finishing on the cricket field. The wet weather failed to dampen spirits and the competition was hot.
The winning team was pre-race favourite ‘The Four Musketeers’ (Sus, Pete H, Pete L & Lucy), who finished with a commanding lead of nearly 3 minutes. There was a close battle for second place, but Freya’s team just held on to beat Richard Beal’s team by 2 seconds. The fastest teams (on actual time) were Andy Buckland’s team (42:26), closely followed by ‘The Four Musketeers’ (42:38), and James Graham’s ‘Hostel Four-Stars’ (43:41).
The fastest lap of the evening
was recorded by Martin (
Full results can be found on Compton Harriers website (http://www.comptonharriers.org.uk).
Thanks to all Harriers who helped out, especially to Jan for time-keeping and Mo for operating the race results programme, also Dick, Martin, Lucy and Sus for helping with setting up and clearing the course, and Pete H for sorting the BBQ money.
Benson 10k - Small race, good for a PB!
Peter Linton
My first time at this one and I can recommend it. Pretty flat course (fewer,
easier hills than Goring 10k, for example) through the back roads around
Benson.
Parking was easy - only 291 runners - and
there's a massive sports hall to prepare yourself. No loo queues!
The winner was Andrew McLeod of Newbury AC in
33:57. Fastest female was Nicola Gomm of
Witney RR in 39:02.
I knocked almost 90s off my PB - now 41:29, so am a happy bunny! My
Garmin record shows the route and terrain details: http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/2714483
Entries are accepted on the
day. Details here

you get a hot cross bun in the goodie bag.

Many youngsters and less
experienced runners set off far too fast in pursuit of the leaders. I set off at a more sedate pace, trying to
keep Ryan in my sights. Although mainly flat,
the route was far from boring, including fields, footpaths, farm tracks, and
disused railway line, and passing through the villages of Blewbury and
There was an hour’s wait for the prize giving, to give all the walkers time to finish and to allow the elderly organiser to walk back from the finish to the school hall. However, the excellent home-made cakes provided a good reason to sit down and wait. The race winner was 17-year old Abingdon Ambler Steve Copley (26:49) while veteran Roger Thetford (Headington RR) took second place and I collected the trophy for first lady. Overall, an enjoyable and friendly local race for people of all ages and all abilities.

Dave Wright usually organises such nice Bank Holiday weather for this race. Last year it was 26oC and I had to apply lots of sun-cream (‘Day-long’, of course). This year it was 6oC, pouring with rain, and windy, and I had to wear long sleeves and gloves. Despite the weather, there was a good turnout for the race. Although one famous Inkpen resident was notable by his absence another, Dave Rees, was there hoping that he didn’t succumb to hypothermia on this occasion.
First man was Andrew Mcleod
(Newbury) in 26:51, and first lady (20th overall) Rachel Elliot
(Team Kennet) in 30:07. I finished as
fourth lady (43rd overall) in 32:11.
Mo completed the course in 52:19 (195th). Other ‘friends of Compton Harriers’ who took
part were Iain (29:44) and Vicky (39:07)

This month,
something completely different for a change. I have set up ‘Compton Harriers Interactive’
which is a social networking site. The
idea is that everyone in the club can participate if they wish in on-line forum
discussions and blogs, add their own running photos and generally have their
say on anything they like.
I have been looking into it ever
since Ricky Bicky said he thought it would be a good idea to have our own blog,
so it’s up to members if they wish to take part or not. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if
you feel like joining in, then all you need to do is to go to http://harriersrun.ning.com and follow the instructions to request an
invite to join the network. I will then
provide the necessary access and away you go!
Once you have registered, you can
set up your own page and running profile … you’ll see a couple of ‘dodgy’
members have already joined … and then you will be able to use the site as you
wish. There is a personal area under the
‘My Page’ menu where you can set it up to suit your own tastes; and a wider
member area where you can take part in group forum discussions, blogs etc. and
also upload photos, videos and add comments.
I have uploaded Tom’s London Marathon photos for a starter, so there
will be something to view on your first visit.
I will also add these photos to the website gallery as well at some
stage.
I’m not entirely sure how Compton Harriers
Interactive will develop, if at all, but it should be fun finding out. You can also set up your own particular
interest groups within Compton Harriers Interactive and invite your own friends
as part of that group or to be part of the main site as well.
The site was free to set up so
there are a few Google Adverts down one side although they are connected to
running on the main page and are fairly discrete.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m not
entirely sure how it will all pan out so I’m sure there will be a few teething
problems, but I’m sure you will keep me up-to-date as things happen.
I have added 3 topics in the
Forum area in order to get discussions started, so I will now eagerly await the
flood of requests to join the network.
Oh, by the way, the network is open for anyone to request an invite to
join, so I will need to carefully vet any external requests to avoid a site
hi-jacking!
